What exactly are they?
Our maps are handcrafted, wooden depth maps. These types of maps are called bathymetry - showing the contours of the ocean floor. Matt uses his graphic design skills to turn information heavy GIS (geographic information system) files into aesthetically beautiful artwork. His passion for the water extends beyond art into freediving and kayaking, and inspiration for products often comes from adventures.
.What materials do we use in our maps?
Our plywood is made of European Birchwood. We also use MDF for the painted layers as they can be painted more consistently than the plywood.
.Can I change the size of my map?

.What if I can’t find the map I’m after?

.How long will it take to get my order?
Products normally take two weeks to make however with a backlog of work on it sometimes takes up to a month. We recommend you make it clear when you need your personal map for and we will try and do our best in order to get to you by the date you need it.
.Can I return my map if I’m not happy with it?
We have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, which mean if you’re not completely satisfied with the quality of your artwork, we’ll offer you a full refund. Your satisfaction is our top priority, and we’re dedicated to ensuring that your map exceeds your expectations. Send us an email or get in touch.
.Do the maps come ready to hang?
Yes, we add a wire to the back of each map before we send them so you can hang it straight on the wall when it arrives.
.Can I view your artwork in person?
We have an office in Ellerslie and we always welcome people to come have a look at how we make the maps. However we make our maps to order so we can’t commit to having the specific map that you are wanting to see at any given time in our workshop.
.How do I care for my map?
Try to keep your Tides Out Map away from direct sunlight, and moisture. Sometimes the map will get dusty. If you have a soft dry paintbrush, use this to carefully wipe away any dust. It works a treat! For more information go to: https://tidesoutmaps.co.nz/pages/looking-after-your-map
.Can I add a Bespoke Addition or customisation to my map?
We offer two methods to personalise your map - engraving a symbol into the top layer, and adding a small cut-out to an ocean layer. This is called a Bespoke addition and you can find out more here. A full customisation is a new map and custom designs can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to create. You can find out more about these here.

Do you ship internationally?
We're just starting to explore a few options here - have shipped plenty of pieces to Australia, and a few to the US. Which country are you considering? We'd be happy to provide a quote once we know the location and the size of the piece.

Shipping Rates:
Throughout New Zealand, we use NZ Post to deliver our products. We want your parcel to get to you safely and quickly.
Once your map is ready, we aim to have your order delivered to you within 1-2 working days. For South Island and rural deliveries, add an extra day to delivery times.
We charge a flat fee for shipping in New Zealand: $30 NZD within New Zealand.
If you are wanting us to ship internationally we can tell you how much it’ll be in advance however we don’t have a set rate.
