Tides Out Maps is a coastal design studio based in Aotearoa New Zealand, born from a love of the ocean, fine craft, and the magic of low tide. We turn real depth and elevation data into layered wooden maps that show the shape of the land and the seafloor around it.
Since our launch, we’ve helped people around the world celebrate the places that matter to them, from tiny island bays to big harbours, all captured with precision and care. Our maps come in sizes from a 22 cm mini to a feature-wall XL.
A bathymetric map shows the shape of the seafloor. Ours are laser cut from layers of birch plywood, one layer for each depth, then hand-painted from light to dark blue so you can see the channels, reefs and sandbanks that usually sit under the water. Put together by hand in our Auckland workshop, each one is a tribute to a place you love.
It all starts with the ocean depth: we source detailed bathymetric data from a variety of government, scientific, and open-source providers to capture the true shape of the seafloor. Each map highlights the contours, sandbanks and estuaries that are normally hidden beneath the waves. Then we draw every layer, laser cut it from birch, and paint and assemble the map by hand.
