FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS WE WILL ANSWER THEM FOR YOU
What exactly are they?
Our maps are handcrafted, wooden depth maps. These types of maps are called bathymetry – showing the contours of the ocean floor. Matt uses his graphic design skills to turn complex GIS files into aesthetically beautiful artwork. His passion for the water extends into freediving and kayaking — inspiration for many of our designs comes from his adventures.
What materials do you use in your maps?
We use high-quality European Birch plywood, and MDF for painted layers to ensure consistent colour. Each layer is laser-cut and assembled by hand.
What are the map dimensions?
We offer multiple standard sizes, listed on each product page. Custom dimensions are also available on request.
Do you use the same scale for each map?
No — every map has a unique scale chosen to best showcase the features of that particular region.
Are your maps geographically accurate?
Yes. We use real-world elevation and coastline data, processed through GIS software and hand-edited for clarity and style.
How are the maps hung?
Each framed map comes ready to hang with a wire on the back. No tools or framing required.
Can I view your artwork in person?
We welcome visits to our Ellerslie studio — just reach out to book a time. Since each map is made to order, we may not have every location available for viewing.
How do you source your data?
We use a mix of open-source bathymetric and topographic datasets, combined and enhanced through our own in-house design process.
Can I buy just the digital files?
No, we don’t offer digital-only versions of our maps in order to preserve the integrity and value of our handcrafted work.
Are your maps ready as gifts?
Yes! Maps are carefully wrapped and ready to gift. You can also leave a note at checkout for a personalised card.
How do you package and ship the maps?
Each map is securely wrapped using eco-friendly packaging and shipped in a reinforced cardboard box to prevent damage.
How long will it take to get my order?
Standard production time is 2 weeks. If we’re experiencing a backlog, it may take up to 4 weeks. Let us know if you have a deadline and we’ll do our best to meet it.
Can I change the size of my map?
Yes! We do custom-sized commissions. More info on our custom design page.
What if I can’t find the map I’m after?
Contact us! We may be able to create it. Custom maps take more time as we need to source and process the data. Learn more here.
Can I add a Bespoke Addition or customisation to my map?
Yes. We offer engraved icons and layered cut-outs to personalise your piece. See examples and options here.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes! We ship regularly to Australia and occasionally to the US. For other locations, just get in touch and we’ll quote you based on size and destination.
What are your shipping rates?
We charge a flat $30 NZD for shipping within New Zealand. Delivery takes 1–2 working days (add an extra day for South Island or rural addresses). International shipping is quoted on request.
Can I return my map if I’m not happy with it?
Yes — we offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you’re not happy, contact us for a refund. We want you to love your piece!
How do I clean and care for my Tides Out Map?
Keep your map away from direct sunlight and moisture. To remove dust, gently brush with a soft dry paintbrush. More info here.
