Gentle ways to keep your map looking its best
Tides Out Maps are crafted with care—from layered plywood to water-based paints and a natural wood oil finish. While your map doesn’t require frequent maintenance, a little thoughtful cleaning from time to time will help preserve its beauty and texture.
Less Is More
When it comes to cleaning, gentle is best. Avoid commercial cleaning products, sprays, or any moisture-based cleaners. These can damage the wood layers or dull the finish over time.
Soft Dusting Only
We recommend using a dry, soft cloth—like a microfiber or lint-free cotton cloth—to gently remove dust from the surface and frame.
Steps:
-
Lightly dust across the surface of the map using slow, sweeping motions.
-
Pay special attention to edges and corners where dust may settle.
-
Avoid pressing into the layered details or dragging the cloth across cutouts.
A feather duster or clean makeup brush can also be helpful for reaching into detailed areas without disturbing the layers.
What to Avoid
To protect your map's finish and structure, avoid:
-
Water or damp cloths
-
Glass cleaners or sprays
-
Furniture polish or oils
-
Vacuum cleaners or compressed air
Tides Out Maps are sealed with a food-grade wood oil and low-VOC paint, but they are still crafted from natural birch plywood. Harsh treatment or moisture can cause swelling, warping, or finish deterioration.
Caring Long-Term
Cleaning is just one part of preserving your map. Keep it in a dry space, out of direct sunlight, and away from high humidity areas like bathrooms or kitchens. When handled gently, your map can remain just as striking as the day it arrived.
