Our Story

Tides Out Maps was born from a love for the ocean. It is our mission to capture the places you love to surf, dive or sail, and turn them into artwork for your home.
.
Starting as a passion project in August 2021, Tides Out Maps is a small New Zealand brand who handcraft beautiful wooden depth maps.
.
Matt and Kate design, cut and create the maps by hand from their workshop in Ellerslie, Auckland.

.
Drawing from his engineering background, Matt uses his graphic design skills to turn information heavy GIS (geographic information system) files into aesthetically beautiful artwork.
.
.
In 2024, Kate came on board. Their passion for the water extends beyond art into freediving, surfing and kayaking, and inspiration for products often comes from their adventures.
.
.
Why the name Tides Out Maps? Imagine if the tides were to recede all the way out.. we'd see the beautiful landscapes that are hidden from sight under the surface of the ocean. It is our mission to bring these landscapes to life.

This is such a unique and detailed gift piece of art to gift to someone. We also had it personalised with an icon which was really special.

We brought a TidesOut map for my Dad's birthday and the process was so easy. Matt and Kate were so good to work with and their communication throughout the building stage was awesome. They got it made and sent away in record time and we absolutely love it. We got the Top of the South map and it is now about to have pride of place in our dining room. Thank you TidesOut!

I met Matt and Kate at the Wooden Boats Festival in Hobart Tasmania and was very impressed with their display of 3D maps. I asked them to make me a Tasmanian map, it arrived this week and is now hanging in my living room. It is a beautiful piece of art and attracts a lot of attention. Thanks Matt and Kate for the Map and keeping me updated on the progress of the build. All the best, Phil
