Care guide

Caring for your map.

Simple ways to help it last a lifetime.

Your map is built to last - layered birch plywood, sealed and finished by hand. A few easy habits will keep it looking its best for decades.

Caring for a layered wooden Tides Out map

The essentials

Three easy habits.

Keep it out of direct sunlight

Every map is finished with two coats of water-based acrylic paint, chosen for its durability and low environmental impact. The finish resists fading, but strong, direct sun is the one thing to avoid. Natural light through a window is fine - just don't hang it where harsh sun lands for hours, or right under a skylight.

Keep it away from moisture

The top layer is sealed with food-grade tung oil, which deepens the grain and helps shield the wood from everyday moisture. Even so, pick a dry spot. Steamy bathrooms, damp basements and kitchen splash zones are the ones to skip - a stable indoor wall keeps both the surface and the shape true over time.

Gentle cleaning only

All your map ever needs is a light dust with a soft, dry brush. No water, no sprays, no chemical cleaners. The exposed grain and layered cutouts are what make your piece one of a kind - treat it the way you'd treat fine furniture.

Built to last, made to be loved

Made in New Zealand, made to be passed down.

Every Tides Out map is made here in New Zealand from sustainably sourced birch plywood and marine-grade paint. The layers are there to be seen and touched, made to reflect the depth and rhythm of the ocean. Beach house or city apartment, it's a lasting tribute to a coastline that means something to you.
